Caribbean Grill to Offer 'Soul Food Sundays' Pop-up
January 19, 2015

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois (January 19, 2015) – Typically known for their authentic Jamaican jerk chicken, rice 'n peas, and more, Caribbean Grill plans to explore southern-style cuisine by offering a 'Soul Food Sundays' weekly pop-up, through the month of February. The limited time soul food menu is being presented in celebration of Black History Month.

Soul food, largely associated with Black American culture, mixes ingredients and cooking methods derived from West Africans who were brought to America as slaves. The name 'soul food' itself speaks to the heart and soul being put into the preparation of dishes that traditionally used leftover cuts of meat, and produce often grown by slaves themselves to sustain entire slave communities. It also refers to the often time consuming and laborious process required to transform such ingredients into a cuisine that has been widely celebrated by all of American culture, not just Black American culture.

Caribbean Grill Executive Chef and Owner Mike Harden says, "Soul food is comfort food, and that is something that every culture can relate to. It's just a matter of geography, really. The produce, grains, and spices that are accessible to a people, at the most basic level, are what make comfort food." Harden hopes to bring customers to the table from all walks of life. "We hope Soul Food Sundays appeals to a wide audience — from people that grew up eating soul food and are intimately familiar with it, to those that have never had a true soul food experience and want to try it," says Harden.

The initial Soul Food Sunday will take place Sunday, February 1, 2015, and will operate similar to Caribbean Grill's already popular Wednesday Lunch to Go service. Meals will be available for carry-out only on Sundays during the month February, from 12:00pm-4:00pm. Caribbean Grill is located inside of Refinery, 2302 W. John Street, Champaign. The menu will vary each Sunday, but kicks things off with Buttermilk Fried Chicken & Waffles as the main entrée, along with scratch-made side dish options, beverages, and dessert. The month's full menu and pricing can be found online at Caribbean Grill's Wednesday only Lunch to Go service will continue to operate as normal; Wednesdays, 11:30am-1:30pm, also located inside Refinery.
